Insect Cell Culture

Insect Cell Culture Insect cell culture is a common choice for heterologous protein expression.  For large scale production or basic research, insect cells are able to express large quantities of protein with complex post-translational modifications.

Gibco® insect media from Invitrogen has been formulated for maximum growth and protein yields.  This media, in combination with Gibco® pre-adapted cell lines, will provide a convenient system to save you time and effort.

Sf9 & Sf21 Cell Culture

Sf9 and Sf21 are ovarian cell lines isolated from the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda.

Gibco® Sf-900™ III SFM is an animal origin–free and protein-free medium formulated with a low hydrolysate concentration.

Grace's Insect Medium

Grace's medium was originally formulated to support the growth of cells from the Australian emperor gum moth. It has been shown to culture a variety of insect lines, including lepidopterans and dipterans.

Grace's supplemented medium is a modification to the original by Dr. W.F. Hink for the growth of cells derived from the cabbage looper Tricoplusia ni. This formula represents the modification known as TNM-FH.

Drosophila S2 Cell Culture

Drosophila S2 cells are used for heterologous protein expression in the Drosophila Expression System (DES). The S2 cell line was derived from a primary culture of late stage Drosophila melanogaster embryos (Schneider, 1972). This adaptable cell line grows without CO2, at room temperature, as a semi-adherent monolayer or suspension in Scheider's Drosophila Medium.

High Five™ Cell Culture

High Five™ Cells (BTI-TN-5B1-4) are a clonal isolate, derived from the parental Trichoplusia ni cell line.  They are optimized for the growth and maintenance of cells used with the Baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) for adherent or suspension culture.  Adapted to serum-free suspension culture in Gibco® Express Five® serum free medium.
