In contrast to the other anti-fluorophore antibodies, which usually quench the fluorescence of the dye to which they bind, this anti-dansyl rabbit IgG antibody typically enhances the fluorescence of dansyl amides by greater than 10-fold. Binding of the anti-dansyl antibody also blue shifts the emission spectrum of the fluorophore in water from ~520 nm to ~450 nm. These properties, combined with the unusually high Stokes shift of the dansyl dye, make this antibody particularly useful for determining the topography of dansyl-labeled probes, including that of dansyl-labeled phospholipids in cell and artificial membranes.
