Specific for ERK

The erks are abundantly expressed in the neurons in a mature central nervous system. ERK1 and ERK 2 are activated by growth factors, hormones and phorbol esters. Phosphorylation of ERK occurs through a series of events which include phosphorylations by kinases which activate other kinases and finally bring about the phosphorylation of erk. Activated ERK plays a role in control of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and regulation of the cytoskeleton. Once the ERK is activated, it phosphorylates cytoplasmic signaling molecules, cell surface receptors, transcription factors, and microtubule associated proteins.
